After Snowiest Winter Ever, Cambridge Local First Helps Businesses Dig Out

Unless you’re a yeti, there’s a pretty good chance that you had a tough go of it this winter. Parking, driving, taking the T, leaving the house in general—it’s all been awful. But it’s been especially difficult for businesses in the Greater Boston area, who watched helplessly as storm after storm slammed the region, leaving shops and eateries empty. A survey published by the Boston Globe earlier this month found that Massachusetts retailers and restaurants saw sales fall almost 50 percent between January 26 and February 22. Not great.

But Cambridge Local First is stepping up to help businesses get back on track this spring with their “Lovin’ Local” raffle game. The contest kicked off on March 16, and you have until April 3 to win prizes including a Hubway membership and gift cards to some of your favorite local establishments. The grand prize? Lunch with Mayor David Maher. Ready get shopping (and hopefully get winning)? Complete contest rules from the Local First website are posted below. Best of luck to all the shoppers out there—and to all the Cambridge businesses trying to get back on their feet this spring.

From Cambridge Local First:

Here’s how it works:

Pick up a game card at one of the following locations:

Mayor’s Office, Cambridge City Hall, 795 Massachusetts Avenue
Cambridge Main Library Branch Q&A Desk, 449 Broadway
Cambridge Community Development Department, City Hall Annex, 344 Broadway
Or download a postcard here (PDF).

Follow the rules:

Step 1: Shop at a local business.
Step 2: Have the local business sign a cell on the postcard
Step 3: Take a picture at one (1) business you visited and tweet, Instagram or Facebook a picture using the hashtag #LovinCambMA. Please tag the business you are visiting, too! The picture could be of you, the storefront, the product you bought, or a receipt. For those who are unable to take a picture, a copy of one receipt from a local business you visited will be accepted.

Fill up at least three cells with three (3) different local businesses. 3 completed cells = one (1) raffle entry, 9 completed cells = 6 raffle entries. If you complete a card with a business from each of the Cambridge commercial districts, you get four (4) extra entries into the raffle. For information on Cambridge commercial districts, click here.

There are three ways to enter:

1) Electronically: Email psaffari@cambridgema.gov a photo or scanned copy of your completed card with signed cells. Make sure your email includes your name, phone number, and social media information.

2) Drop off your card to one of the Lovin’ Local Boxes located at Cambridge City Hall or Cambridge City Hall Annex. Make sure to fill out your contact information.

3) Mail the postcard to Cambridge Community Development Department, Economic Development Division, 344 Broadway, 3rd floor, Cambridge, MA 02139.

Postcards are due by noon on Friday, April 3, 2015.
