The Brattle Theatre has quite a sense of humor—as evidenced by their Father’s Day screening of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.” The big daddy of psychological horror films comes to the Cambridge silver screen on Sunday, June 21. Grab the family (creepy imaginary friends, too) to watch as Jack Nicholson destroys his with the help of the world’s most inhospitable hotel.
Kubrick took on Stephen King’s spine-chilling book with his trademark fanaticism and wrote the 1980 screenplay himself. “The Shining” follows recovering alcoholic and struggling writer Jack Torrance as he relocates his wife and young son to the secluded Overlook Hotel for the Colorado winter season. Jack has been made caretaker, but the hotel seems to have other plans. Madness—quite literally—ensues and puts Nicholson’s psychotic grin (well-honed in 1975’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”) to good use. The many quotable lines added to the movie canon include his adlibbed “Here’s Johnny!” and gifted son Danny’s obsessive chanting of “redrum.” Shiver.
For something a little more palatable, visit PARK for a “Shining”-inspired cocktail without ghostly hotel bartender Lloyd. Bar manager Derek Almeida is responsible for the restaurant’s creative craft cocktail list and he’s put together The Redrum Punch for calming your movie-jangled nerves. The drink features two kinds of rum that give the beverage a Tiki-like taste along with sweet orgeat syrup and lime to balance the flavor profile. Jalapeno-infused Aperol and Hellfire bitters add a touch of heat to cover all the palate bases.
The PARK bar is the opposite of the Overlook (thank goodness), nestled into the heart of bustling Harvard Square. It features four distinct dining areas (The Dining Room, The Classroom, The Den, and The Back Room) decorated with curio and in warm tones for a comforting comfort-food experience. Make a reservation for Father’s Day brunch or dinner on Sunday and you’ll get free parking at the Harvard Square Parking Garage. The flick goes on at 6:00 p.m. and movie tickets are available online. PARK’s Sunday bar hours are 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. and you can take a peek at Almeida’s handiwork here. Dive into The Redrum Punch with Dad and take a trip to the Overlook for a tasty, and thrilling, Father’s Day.
