Face to Face: Portraits of Museum Animals by Jana Matusz

April 8 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 9:00 am, repeating until June 21, 2020

Regular museum admission rates apply.

On view from March 14th–June 21st

Jana Matusz’s portraits use vibrant color and texture to give life and voice to the faces of animal specimens otherwise frozen in time and space. Made with love and reverence for the animals she paints, Jana has imbued each with a personality all its own.

As Jana painted these portraits, she felt she made a connection with each animal. Jana hasn’t said exactly what they revealed to her. Take part in our caption gallery activity and answer the question, “What do these animal portraits say to you?” Turn the sheet in to the gift shop and we may choose your caption to be featured on the museum social media channels.

Artists of all ages love to sketch in museums. Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist, sketching helps you observe in a new way. Take a sketching sheet to look at the animals from a different perspective! Be creative! Your sketch does not have to look exactly like the animal in the gallery.
