The Arts & Crafts Houses of Massachusetts
May 21 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pmFree
Historic preservation consultant and former curator of the Cambridge Historical Society, Heli Meltsner, will be giving a presentation on and signing her new book The Arts & Crafts Houses of Massachusetts: A Style Rediscovered (Bauhan Publishing) at the Cambridge Public Library.
Inspired by the English Arts & Crafts Movement, early twentieth-century Massachusetts architects wanted to create an authentic new style to reflect their American clients’ increasingly informal way of life. Their resulting designs were charming, and clearly distinguishable from Arts & Crafts houses in other regions of the country. But the Massachusetts Arts & Crafts style slipped from popularity after the end of World War I and the houses that embody it have largely been overlooked—until now. The Arts & Crafts Houses of Massachusetts: A Style Rediscovered finally brings these houses, hidden in plain sight, the attention they deserve.
Heli Meltsner is also the author of The Poorhouses of Massachusetts: A Cultural and Architectural History (2012), and an editor of Saving Cambridge: Historic Preservation in America’s Innovation City (2013). A resident of Cambridge, she serves on the Avon Hill Neighborhood Conservation District Commission, and is passionate about historic houses and helping them survive to tell their stories.
