One day, I will write my memoir Breakfast Sandwiches I Have Loved, but today I just want to give a quick shout out to Cambridge institution Darwin’s, Ltd. and their early morning works of art.
You’ve always been there for me when I needed you and you will always have my love, respect and undying appetite. Father’s Day is coming up and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than with a delicious breakfast sandwich.
I’ve been a fan of Darwin’s for as long as I can remember (high school, apparently?) but in the summer of 2018 it all changed. That summer my son was born at Cambridge Hospital. Darwin’s became family.
It was an epic labor (36 hours!) and we had to spend an extra week in the hospital because my wife had the same condition that killed Lady Sybil on Downton Abbey. It was a sleepless and stressful and surreal week, fueled mostly by breakfast sandwiches.
The Longest Week of My Life
While the care at Cambridge Hospital was incredible and their help indispensable, hospital food will always be hospital food. Whenever the nurses had to do nurse stuff and I could sneak out of the room I would run to Darwin’s for coffee and food.
I ate my way through that breakfast menu and most of the sandwich menu and loved every bite. Becoming a father was wonderful but so was getting to eat at Darwin’s two (maybe three) times a day, guilt-free.
Which is all to say: Get Dad a breakfast sandwich for Father’s Day. No, get dad two breakfast sandwiches. And when I say “dad” I mean me. I would like to eat all the breakfast sandwiches.
