Between the hustle, bustle and—let’s be honest—occasional utter chaos of prepping for the holiday season, it can be tough to find time to get out into the community and find gifts at independent Cambridge shops. That’s one of the reasons why, for more than ten years, the shopping community at Porter South (that’s the stretch of Mass. Ave. south of Porter Square, natch) has come together on a Saturday in December for a little late night shopping party. This year’s Late Night Shopping Madness will take place on Saturday, December 12.
According to Abodeon‘s Emily Anderson, who has been running her family’s business for close to a decade herself, this annual get-together is as fun for Cambridge’s shoppers as it is for Porter’s store owners. “We’re so busy this time of year,” she says. “It’s great to support our other local shop owners so that we’re all making sure that customers are coming in and out and visiting.” This year’s participating stores include Irish Imports, Susanna, Joie de Vivre and Nomad (many of which were featured in our 2015 local gift guide!).
Anderson adds that many of the stores at Porter South are independently owned and don’t have regular late night hours, but they’ll be keeping their doors open through 10 p.m. for the Late Night Shopping Madness festivities, giving gift hunters who might not usually have time in their day the opportunity to check out these unique shops.
And there’s more to this celebration than just shopping; at Abodeon, you’ll be able to catch live music from a band playing in their window. Other local businesses will be offering food and drink, as well as a chance to meet the people who run their favorite independent stores.
“Neighbors come out and see each other, and we can all feel neighborhood enthusiasm,” Anderson adds. “I really look forward to it every year.”
