Scout Picks: Scoop on ice cream flavors

168797878Whether you’re braving the heat on a sweaty stroll or sitting stagnant in front of your industrial sized fan, you deserve a break. An ice cream break, that is.

There’s nothing more comforting than cooling down with a cone from your favorite neighborhood spot, and in the city of Cambridge, there’s certainly a lot to choose from. While it may be tempting to stick with classic chocolate or plain old pistachio, why not change it up with a seasonal summertime flavor? Each establishment has at least one, and after asking around, here’s the scoop:

Christina’s Homemade Ice Cream in Inman Square is known for its massive flavor board, which changes almost every day. There have been quite a few new additions recently, but they cite the watermelon sorbet as their most refreshing. It’s not as heavy as their traditional creamy offerings, but its crisp, fruity taste is sure to cut through the summer heat.

Toscanini’s of Central Square has won countless awards for its innovative concoctions, making it one of Cambridge’s most popular destinations. This summer, their featured flavor is a deadly trifecta of brown sugar, brown butter and brownie. A combination like that has got to be worth both the walk and the wait in line.

Harvard Square is home to quite a few ice cream eateries, with Lizzy’s being one of its most loved. They have a limited time offering of white pistachio in addition to sweet and nostalgic bubblegum, which appeals to the kid inside every customer. J.P. Licks has quite a few featured flavors, including (but not limited to) peach, cucumber and raspberry lime rickey sorbets. You can try all three at once piled high on a sugar cone, or savor them on separate occasions. Either way, you’ll be coming back for more.

Emack & Bolio’s in Porter Square is currently offering flavors on opposite sides of the spectrum, with tropical passion fruit sorbet and rich bananas foster. We recommend enjoying whatever you choose on one of their famous cones covered in your choice of marshmallows, nuts, cereals, sprinkles or chocolate.

Froyo favorite BerryLine, located in both Harvard and Porter Square, has crafted a blueberry basil flavor that is both refreshing and entirely unique.  –Alessia Antonucci
