Everyone here at Scout Cambridge freaked out a little bit last month when President Barack Obama called into Deval Patrick’s radio show. “Governor, this is Barack Obama, formerly of Somerville,” the Commander in Chief intoned. “I’ve got a few complaints.”
Of course, he was kidding; the prez really just wanted to congratulate the outgoing governor on two successful terms. Still, we thought we’d take this opportunity to tell this one-time Harvard University grad student about some of the impressive changes that have taken place in Somerville and Cambridge since he lived here back in the late ’80s. So we bundled up a few of our latest issues and shipped them off to the White House along with a note telling Obama about what’s going on in Cambridge and Somerville. If you can’t humble-brag to the leader of the free world, who can you humble-brag to?
“Dear President Barack Obama, formerly of Somerville,
When you called into former Governor Deval Patrick’s radio show last year, you mentioned that you had a few complaints about the neighborhood where you spent some of your years as a Harvard grad student. While you didn’t elaborate (and were probably kidding), we just thought you might want to know how your old city has been doing.
Did you know we have our very own glossy magazine now? (That’s us!) Or that Somerville’s neighborhoods are being revitalized by SomerVision, a nationally renowned urban planning outfit headed up by our very own Leslie Knope-style senior planner? Mr. Biden knows what we’re talking about.
Somerville has come a long way since the days when you occupied your basement apartment in the Winter Hill neighborhood. Let us know if you ever want to take a look at all the cool stuff we’ve got going on – we’d be happy to show you around.
