Somerville-based small-batch spice company Curio Spice will open the doors to its first-ever brick and mortar location this fall.
Curio’s wares have become a staple at local makers marts like SoWa (and are available at Cambridge Naturals and a handful of other shops around town), and owner and spice maker Claire Cheney says that over the last two years the business has been growing too big for its current home, a kitchen in the Taza Chocolate building she shares with EHChocolatier.
So this summer, she signed a lease just outside of Davis Square at 2265 Mass. Ave.
“It’s a very exciting dream in the works,” Cheney says.
The forthcoming Curio location will actually be located in the same block of businesses that houses Spindler Confections, another small-batch Somerville company that has made the move to Cambridge in the last year. “We were talking about it!” Cheney laughs. “Both of us were initially looking for a space in Somerville and just kind of ran out of luck.”
Her brick-and-mortar storefront will predominantly be stocked with her spices as well as some accoutrements—mortar and pestles, pepper grinders—and Cheney hopes that the new shop will be open by the end of October.
