The January/February issue of Scout Cambridge has a fitness plan for you, whether you’re a regular runner, want to try something new or have never exercised a day in your life. The folks at local training centers took us into their high-tech, high-intensity spaces—including a new facility where you’re hooked up to a heart monitor while you work out. A pair of empowering trainers shared their secrets to success, and we talked about the incredibly varied—and surprisingly inexpensive!—programming at the Cambridge YMCA. (“Punk Rope,” anyone?) We also cut a rug with the folks at The Dance Complex—did you know their massive Central Square studio is almost entirely volunteer-run? And the team at Redline Fight Sports took us into the ring, where they teach trainees to kick ass while fostering a safe, inclusive environment.
Outside the gym, we caught up with the folks behind two local clothing institutions that make up the fabric of this community, and we shared stories from Transition House, the oldest domestic violence shelter in New England, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Craving sweets? We’ve also got a roundup of the city’s most mouthwatering desserts—both healthy and utterly decadent.
